Academic Search Complete Database: Finding Scholarly Articles

This libguide will help you to learn how to use the multidisciplinary database, Academic Search Complete.

Finding Scholarly Articles

Academic Search Complete offers access to a huge collection of scholarly articles.  In the example below we wish to find scholarly, peer reviewed articles on the benefits of music.

1.    To begin we enter our search terms "music" and "benefits" into the search boxes. Since we wish to return articles that contain both of these terms we verify that the Boolean expression AND is selected in the drop down box.

2.    We wish to limit our search to scholarly, peer reviewed articles so we check the box next to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals in the "Limit your Results" section under the search boxes.

3.    When we click the search button we find 2,310 results. To narrow down the results we will use the "Refine your results" menu on the left side of the screen. In this case we will narrow our search by using the "Subject: Thesaurus Term" option.

4.    Under "Subject: Thesaurus Term" is a listing of terms we can narrow our results by. For our demonstration we have selected the term "music therapy". This has now narrowed our results to 266 articles. You can see all of your limiters on the left hand side of the screen.

5.    We can further narrow our results by using the "Refine your results" menu on the left side of the screen. By using the slider or entering a range of publication dates we can limit our results to only articles published within the range we have specified. Here we have limited the search to articles published within the last 2 years, taking our results down to 72 articles.
