Academic Search Complete Database: General Search Tips

This libguide will help you to learn how to use the multidisciplinary database, Academic Search Complete.

Search Tips

Academic Search Complete provides many powerful tools to help you limit or to expand a search as you require. To demonstrate we have provided an example below.

1. We wish to search for periodicals in English about exercise techniques. To begin we enter our search terms exercise techniques in the search box.

 2. Next we select Periodical from the drop down menu next to Publication Type.

 3. We then select English from the drop down menu next to Language.

4. When we click the Search button we get over 1,500 results. To further limit our search, we can select a range of publication dates from the Refine your results menu on the left side of the screen. Below you can see we have entered a publication range from 2015 to 2020.

5. We can further narrow our results by using the options on the Refine Your Results menu on the left side of the screen. For example, try refining the search to Scholarly (Peer-reviewed) Journals.

6. We have now narrowed our results to less than 400 academic journal articles that have been published since 2015 on the topic of exercise techniques. These results can be narrowed even further by using additional search narrowing options on the Refine your Results menu.
