Filtering Your Search

From the search results page you can begin to limit your search by using any of the following filters on the right column:

• Availability (In-Library, Online, Open Access, and Peer Review)
• Resource Type (book, e-book, article, DVD, etc.)
• Author/Creator
• Subject
• Publication Date
• Language
• Journal Title
• Genre
• Collection

Using Boolean Operators 

Boolean search operators used in combination with your keywords will help you broaden and narrow your search. When using Boolean operators in Compass, they must be capitalized. These search strategies will help you focus your search on your topic to find relevant results.

• AND: Use "AND" between words to combine keywords and phrases
  • Narrows search
• OR: Use "OR" between words to accept either word for the results
  • Broadens search
• NOT: Use "NOT" between two words to eliminate a specific sub-topic from your search
  • Narrows search
• Truncation*: Add a * after a root word to retrieve results for various endings of a word
  • Broadens search
• "Quotations": Add quotations around a phrase to search for the exact phrase
  • Narrows search
