NSF Data Management Plans

Introduction

Proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation must include a supplemental plan that describes how the proposal conforms to the NSF's policy on the dissemination and sharing of research results.

As every research project is unique, so is every data management plan. Chapter II of the NSF's Grant Proposal Guide gives some general guidelines, stating that a DMP should include information on the types of data produced, the data and metadata standards to be used, plans for sharing and access, policies for re-use and redistribution, and plans for archiving and preservation of the data. These are the general DMP requirements, but certain disciplines have more detailed specifications which are listed in the table below.

Each tab on this guide represents a separate section of the general DMP requirements and contains points to consider in the section as well as suggestions for sample language to include in your plan where appropriate.
