This Advocacy Information Packet is a collection of articles, booklets and handouts covering a range of topics about advocacy with emphasis on work with survivors of intimate partner violence. These materials offer information that is critical to clarifying and strengthening the role of advocates and their work to end violence against women and other survivors. The goal is to create a basic understanding about the role of advocates, the nature of advocacy and some key issues integral to effective advocacy. These materials can be helpful for new advocate orientation, in-services, cross-trainings and public education events.

Students are often an underutilized resource for advocacy and activism. Students have a unique positionality as members of academia who greatly understand the power and privilege higher education can bring- particularly when they have intersectional identities as women, minorities, and members of marginalized groups. This article tells the stories of two such Native American women who are using their power and privilege as it intersects with lived experience to bring awareness to the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). The article brings light to what drives them to promote social justice movements and how they work to institute positive change. Through their experiences, they share suggestions for how advanced professionals and professional organizations can aid students in engaging in social justice movements through empowerment, connection, and support. With students as the feet on the ground and the voice for the voiceless, we hope to promote awareness of MMIW and institute lasting change to protect our Native American women and girls.

MMIW USA’s number one mission is to bring our missing home and help the families of the murdered cope and support them through the process of grief. We give them hands-on support and guidance and if we don’t have the answers, we get the answers so that these families do not feel abandoned and alone in this struggle like so many have before them.

The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, Inc. (NIWRC) is a Native-led nonprofit organization dedicated to ending violence against Native women and children. The NIWRC provides national leadership in ending gender-based violence in tribal communities by lifting up the collective voices of grassroots advocates and offering culturally grounded resources, technical assistance and training, and policy development to strengthen tribal sovereignty. Our staff and board of directors consist of Native women from throughout the United States with extensive experience and commitment to ending violence against Native women and their children. Urban Indian Health Institute is decolonizing data to ensure that Native communities have access to accurate data that better reflects the unique cultures, traditions, and health needs of urban Indian communities.

Haseya Advocate Program is a Native woman-led organization that serves Indigenous survivors of domestic and sexual violence in the Colorado Springs, Colorado region. We empower Native survivors to overcome domestic and sexual violence by providing culturally sensitive and appropriate advocacy, including safety planning, access to information and resources, accompaniment, and problem solving.
Haseya is the only program in the state of Colorado that provides domestic and sexual violence advocacy for urban Indigenous survivors.
