SSI is the U.S. Army's think tank for the analysis of national security policy and military strategy. SSI's primary function is to provide direct analysis for Army and Department of Defense leadership, and serve as a bridge to the wider strategic community. The USIP is an independent, nonpartisan federal institution created by Congress to promote the prevention, management, and peaceful resolution of international conflicts. Established in 1984, the Institute meets its congressional mandate through an array of programs, including research grants, fellowships, professional training, education programs from high school through graduate school, conferences and workshops, library services, and publications. Many of their publications are individually cataloged in Peak.

A research project of the National Defense University Library, MERLN is home to the Military Policy Awareness Links (MiPALS). MiPALS provides direct access to defense-related U.S. policy statements on selected key topics. Access is by country or regions, as well as be selected major topics (terrorism, homeland security, etc.).
