Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Documents: Database Searching Research Tips

[General description of FBIS program and docs]

Tips for Searching the FBIS Database

This index covers the FBIS translations for 1975 through 1996. These articles are only available in microfiche, not online full-text. Most of the fiche are held by University Libraries in the government documents cabinets in the Hampden Stacks. For best results use the minimum information in the search.

Make a note of the date, FBIS region and govdocs call number. The microfiche cabinets are located on the lower level. Find the drawer labeled with the FBIS region, then locate the folder by date. Next locate the item by the page number.

ex. iran-contra FBIS Region: Latin America (LAT)

Tips for Searching the World News Connection [WNC] Database

WNC links to the full text. Best results are obtained with generous use of truncation and proximity symbols, even after the end of a proper name. Ex. Rome? or Saddam()Hussein.

Like the other FBIS database, it is best to use the minimum search information and the fewest search windows. Determine the most relevant search element. You may find better results experimenting with the search windows; ie. use entire article (only), or words in headline (only)or headline/lead paragraph (only)
