Research Carrels

Carrels provide quiet space within the Anderson Academic Commons for advanced research. Shared research carrels are available in Room 180, along with lockers for storage. This guide explains how to reserve a research carrel.

Overview

The carrel room is a quiet space within the Anderson Academic Commons reserved for those currently working on advanced research projects with the University of Denver. This space is located in AAC 180 and is comprised of individually designated carrels as well as a small number of lockers, larger table tops and arm chairs. Access to the carrel room is controlled via DU ID card and is only granted to current students and researchers who have checked-out a carrel for the quarter. Due to the limited number of carrels available, you are required to submit an application prior to checking-out a carrel. Applications are approved on a case-by-case basis and require advisor confirmation as well as a library account in good standing. Continued access to the carrel room is contingent on cooperation with all library and carrel room policies.

Application Process

University of Denver students who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply for a research carrel:

• Doctoral candidates who are researching/writing their dissertation

• Masters candidates who are writing their thesis or capstone

• Undergraduate students engaged in extended research projects (e.g. senior thesis, PINS project)

Applications should be accompanied by an email from a faculty advisor confirming that the student is currently working on a qualifying research project. Please ask your faculty advisor to send a brief email confirming your status and research project to carrels-l@du.edu.

Carrels are checked-out to your library account each quarter to allow for equitable use. Students may apply for a renewal each quarter as needed. The carrel reservation period begins on the first day of each quarter and continues through the following interterm.

Carrels are assigned based on the criteria listed above.  The University Libraries will make every effort to accommodate researcher needs, but high demand may not allow us to assign a carrel to every applicant each quarter. If you are assigned a carrel, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to confirm your reservation.

Applications are currently closed. Please check back later for updates.

Library Materials

  • Library materials may be kept in carrels or in lockers.
  • All materials must be checked out.
    • Library staff monitor carrels and lockers; possession of unchecked-out library materials may result in confiscation of materials and loss of privileges.
  • All library materials and personal property must be removed from the carrel room at the conclusion of the reservation term.
    • If items are not removed by the student by the carrel due date, they will be removed by the library and held at Lending as lost and found.
    • Any library materials left in the carrel room after the conclusion of the reservation term may be checked back in to the library.

Furniture and Maintenance

  • Library furniture from other areas of the building may not be moved into the carrel room.
    • Carrels are furnished with a chair, desk, and a shelf.
  • Lockers are not assigned to carrels, but may be used on a first-come, first-served basis. Students should not use more than one locker in the carrel room at a time.
  • Furniture other than the individual carrel and assigned chair are for communal use.
    • Materials left in or on communal furniture may be confiscated and sent to Lost and Found; preventing others from using communal furniture by blocking space or leaving materials out may result in loss of privileges.
  • Heaters, heating elements, and microwaves are not allowed in carrels. No candles or open flame are allowed in the building.
  • Food and beverages are permitted in the carrels, but care should be taken so as not to damage library materials or invite pests into the space.
  • Carrels may not be used for purposes other than active research.
  • Students are responsible for keeping their carrel area clean.

Security

  • The Research Carrels room is only accessible via card tap to those who have a reserved carrel for the quarter.
    • Students will not have card tap access to the carrel room after the conclusion of the reservation term.
  • Personal materials, such as laptops, cell phones, and iPads, should be kept in lockers and not left out on the study carrels.
    • University of Denver Libraries assumes no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, personal possessions kept in carrels or lockers.
