This guide is relevant not only for Marketing 4100, but also for XMBA 4360 (Strategic Marketing) and other similar marketing courses.

Sources for Obtaining NAICS and SIC Codes

When doing business research, it is useful to obtain the NAICS codes and SIC codes.   The links below will help you find the codes for specific types of industries.  You can also find NAICS and SIC codes by looking at the industry information for a company in a database like Mergent Intellect.

It is important to know these codes in order to retrieve statistical information produced by the Census as well as search certain databases by these codes.  For instance you can use it to find industry overviews in databases like First Research.  You can also use the NAICS code in a database like Business Patterns to determine past industry trends for the U.S, country, metro areas, and in many cases for zip codes.

Using NAICS Codes

One source you can use to apply NAICS codes is the Business Patterns database from the U.S. Census Bureau.  This can help you determine what has been the trend in a particular industry from a National, County, Metro, or Zip Code perspective.  Please note, however, that this will probably not include those establishments that are purely web-based.

You can also use NAICS and SIC codes to find Industry reports from First Research.

Use the NAICS and SIC codes in Mergent Intellect and build a list of competitors from a U.S. city level to country level.
